Today I was getting my nails done and I had both hands in the little thing with the nail remover waiting to get the trotters off,  (my real nails are thinner than paper which isn’t cute so I need to give them a rest).

 ANYWAY (cool story mate)

I was sat watching the traffic go past, listening to a Vietnamese singer on youtube and oh god, the overwhelming sense of frustration, panic and ultimate despair came in. Probably the most annoying thing that could happen when you can’t use either hands happened to me ….an itch!! I needed to desperately itch my cheek.

So here I am trying to figure out a method of how best to get this itch with contemporary dance moves which can only be described as a chicken who is trying to fly but hasn’t quite worked out how to yet. You know the classic bicep to face vibe, then the glasses fell down my nose so picture the scene….

Mrs goggins clucking her arms like a chicken while the wheels of the chair roll in and out of under the table due to my movements…not cute hun.

Thankfully I managed to distract myself with a thought and it went away and the glasses well I just styled them out.

This got me thinking that this situation right there is a great representation of how I feel in the industry that I am in.

Far fetched I know this is just how my brain works.

Each day I turn up to the gym working with clients, talking with clients and studying to help become the best coach I can be for myself and my clients.

However each day I am faced with the itch that I just can’t itch properly.

When going into the shop today I looked on the shelves and there was Women’s Health and Men’s Health. On the front of men’s health there is a guy with cheese grater abs and in big writing “lose your gut, shed 2kg in two weeks”.

When looking at Women’s health – the same. By page 7 I had seen 6 pictures of ‘celebs’ in a sports bra and 3 mentions of plastic surgery alone, not to mention anything else (ie fad diets, quick fixes, 6 week abs ect…).

Now, do not get me wrong this is not shaming those people who have bodies like that, they look incredible but is this the most inspiring and approachable method of getting people into health and fitness? By this I mean ONLY featuring physiques like this.

Are we now living in a world where we are categorised on our fitness and health by level of visible abs?

Equally in the same breath, are those also being judged for having abs?

There is so much judgement, comparison and more to the point CONFUSION.

What is the best for….eating, training, sleeping? How long shall I do this for? How many times a week? When should I do this? How should I do this?

The answer?

WHAT WORKS FOR YOU? WHAT WILL YOU SUSTAIN? WHAT DO YOU ENJOY?

People are being blinded by fad diets, quick fixes, fake images, misinformation, click bait after click bait but we seem to keep falling straight into this net.

What has happened to going on a journey, meeting new people, learning new things, learning about your body, going with the ups and downs and growing as much as possible inside and outside?

Why are we in a rush?

Think of the tortoise and the hare?

Be the tortoise, take your time, educate yourself, surround yourself with people you trust, surround yourself with people who want to see you grow not fall. Enjoy the process, it’s not going to be easy all the time, but it’s certainly going to be a journey.

Take your time because you owe that to yourself, remember you want to work on your body and mind because you love yourself not because you loathe it.

Ask questions but don’t be afraid to ask why? Don’t be afraid to ask more than one person. Don’t take everything as golden just because it’s printed in a magazine.

As the gorgeous Sohee Lee says see your journey as a toilet roll – each day you take a piece off, you won’t notice day to day but in a week, month, certainly a year’s time you will notice a considerable difference to your roll.

Be consistent, be patient and enjoy and remember you can’t move forward if you are always looking in your rear view mirror.

Until next time , but for now here are a few myths to shut down right now.

1.     You can’t spot reduce fat. There is no exercise that will target a specific body part to “get smaller”. Get yourself in an energy deficit and you will lose fat all over, some places just go first – it depends on you!!

2.     You don’t have to have breakfast. It’s not going to boost your metabolism if you have it or slow it if you don’t.

3.     Eating past a certain time will make you fat. Nope sorry – the foods/drinks hold the same calorie value whether it’s 6pm or 11pm!

4.     You don’t have to do hours of cardio for weight loss. Of course cardio training has great benefits but it’s not mandatory for fat loss. Get yourself lifting!

5.     “Eat this, it’s a fat burning food” ….Food doesn’t ‘burn’ fat, it provides energy
